Profitability of fertilizer: Experimental evidence from female rice farmers in Mali

چکیده
Intensified use of agricultural inputs, particularly fertilizer, is a possible route to improved agricultural productivity. Field trials of these technologies show substantial increases in yields, but typically are done on highly monitored experimental plots rather than by farmers themselves. Returns to a certain technology might be quite different on real-world farms than on experimental farms, particularly when farmers must re-optimize multiple inputs in response to a new technology. Suri (2011) argues that not all farmers benefit from fertilizer use, despite there being high average returns. Behavioral biases may also prevent farmers from realizing their intentions to use fertilizer (Duflo, Kremer and Robinson, 2011). We use a simple field experiment to provide free fertilizer to women rice farmers in southern Mali to measure how farmers choose to use the fertilizer, what changes they make to their agricultural practices, and the profitability of this set of changes. Rice is an important crop in the study area. It is almost exclusively farmed on women-controlled plots. The technology is low-input intensive and is “broadcast” farmed on non-irrigated flood planes: seeds are literally scattered loosely into a plot, rather than small plants transplanted from nurseries to rows in the plot. The rice production is mostly used for own consumption. Fertilizer is recommended by local agricultural extension agents and believed to substantially increase yields (Government of Mali, 2009). Nevertheless, only

To meet the growing food demand of Bangladesh requires efficiently use of inputs and effectively manage of production practices at the farm level. Thus, the present study aims to measure the technical efficiency and establish core factors affecting boro and aman rice production in Bangladesh. The study employed mainly farm level data collected from 80 farm households selected randomly in Dinajp...
متن کاملEvidence from Karnataka
Hybrid rice cultivation has not increased significantly in Karnataka since the introduction of hybrids in the state in the mid-1990s. This study focuses on the profitability aspects of hybrid rice cultivation based on farmers’ experiences during the 2000-01 crop year. Hybrid rice was found to be higher yielding but less profitable than existing high-yielding varieties. The paper provides reason...

The study examines the effects of awareness of fertilizer subsidy on the yield of crops among rural farmers in Ghana. Random sampling was used to select six communities and 10 households per community. They include Bawku, Navrongo, Tolon kumbungu and Walewale from the Northern part and Ejura and Atebubu in the Southern part of Ghana. Primary data were collected from the sampled household by ...

The use of nitrogen fertilizer has a key role in enhancing agricultural productivity worldwide. In order to achieve an effective approach to enhance nitrogen use efficiency in rice, a field experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications and 13 treatments on Shiroudi, a high yielding rice cultivar in Rice Research Institute of Iran (Amol) in 2015 and 2016....
